Staff report
Because of the severe weather over the Fourth of July weekend,
Suffolk Parks and Recreation has agreed to postpone the fireworks display until Friday, Oct. 8 at the Peanut Festival.
Suffolk Festivals has been unable to find the resources to include a fireworks show for the past two years at the Peanut Festival.
&uot;It was a heartbreaking decision to make,&uot; said Mark Furlo of the department of Parks and Recreation. &uot;Our staff had put so much time and energy into the Independence Day event, that none of us wanted to see it canceled. When the weather finally cleared on Sunday evening it was evident that our fireworks vendor would not have enough time to set up for the 9:30 pm scheduled show.&uot;
Parks and Recreation was unable to schedule a rain date sooner because of airport regulations. The event was moved to the airport last year after attempting the celebration at Sleepy Hole Park. The park was unable to accommodate the parking that is generated by an event this size.
