High-speed chase suspect faces 16 felony charges

The man who in May led police on a multi-city, high-speed chase that ended in Lake Meade will be arraigned before a grand jury July 26.

In General District Court Tuesday, 16 felony charges were certified against William Elton Gray, 33, of Virginia Beach. Certified charges include four counts of attempted malicious wounding, one count of malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, five counts of felony hit and run, five counts of felony destruction to state property, and one felony count of eluding police.

Also on Tuesday, Gray was tried for one misdemeanor count of hit and run and one misdemeanor count of destruction to state property. He received 12 months – with six month suspended – for each conviction.

Gray is being held in Western tidewater Regional Jail without bail.

He is also facing charges in Portsmouth, said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Marie Walls.
