John Woodrow Overton

John Woodrow Overton, son of Annie M. Bond Overton and the late John Thomas Overton, was born on April 22, 1939 in Tyner (Chowan County) North Carolina.

The Lord called him home from labor to reward on Monday, July 26, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

John was raised in North Carolina, and graduated from Edenton High School in Edenton, North Carolina.

He worked for over 20 years with the New York City Housing Authority and retired as supervisor in 1994.

He was also the president of T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home.

John leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Mattie Savage-Overton; two sons, Paul Overton and Gary Overton; his mother, Annie M. Overton; three brothers, Howard Overton of Raleigh, NC, Lloyd Overton (Edna) of Portsmouth, VA and Wayne Overton (Barbara) of Queens, New York; five sisters, Jane Valentine, Doris Gordon, Jessie Morgan, Cora Overton (Tom) of Chesapeake, VA and Rev. Frances L. Overton of Fayetteville, NC; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Aaliyah; one aunt, Dora P. Freeman of Chesapeake; one uncle, Lloyd Bond of WV; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Chesson, Gladys Davis and Ann Mason; six brothers-in-law, Cleophus (Betty), John (Linda), William (Adel), James Walter (Judy), Willie (Travis) and Joel (Sharon) Savage; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, July 31 at Little Zion Baptist Church, 141 Kempsville Rd in Chesapeake. The viewing will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 29 and from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, July 30 at T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home.

The Masonic Service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 30. Interment at Roosevelt Cemetery in Chesapeake. T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home in charge.
