An elderly woman was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after she struck a city trash truck around noon Tuesday.
Mabel Holloway, 69, of the 7000 block of Indian Trail Road, was in critical condition Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Holloway was driving a 1999 Buick east on Route 58, in the Lummis Road area, when she struck the 1995 GMC trash truck, said Lt. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department. No one was in the truck, which was stopped to pick up a trash collection.
The accident closed Route 58 eastbound lanes for about one hour, George said. Eastbound traffic was redirected to the westbound lane until the accident was cleared.
Charges are pending, George said.
