Great Bridge held on to tie Nansemond River 1-1 in both teams’ Suffolk Invitational Field Hockey tournament opener on Thursday at Lakeland. Though the Lady Warriors held a 7-2 shooting advantage throughout, they were unable to smack in a goal.

Ashley Fulton got the Lady Warriors on the board first midway through the first half. Trapped in the middle of a mass of players in front of the Great Bridge goal, the ball skittered out to the right side of the circle to Jessica Watahovich.

She passed back across the center to Fulton near the left goalpost, and the Lady Warrior snuck a shot just inside the pole for the score. But the Lady Wildcats tied the score two minutes into the second half, and fought off every NR attack from then on.

Tournament action continued Friday afternoon at Lakeland, as Lakeland, who defeated Landstown in their opening game on Wednesday, battled Granby and River took on Churchland in games not completed at press time.

The event concludes today, as River faces Kecoughtan and the Lady Cavaliers play Catholic, with championship games to be played later on Saturday afternoon.
