C.J. White scored three touchdowns and an extra point as Nansemond-Suffolk defeated Inner-City 27-0 in Junior Pee-Wee Pop Warner football action Saturday at John F. Kennedy Middle School. All but four of White’s 87 yards for the day were on scoring runs.
The Saint defense held the Steelers on their opening drive, obtaining possession on the IC 29. Ryan Davis ran twice to reach the 17, and T.J. Gay got to the 13. White and Davis then rushed to the eight, and White soon hustled five yards around the left end to score. The extra point failed, leaving the game at 6-0.
Before the Steelers touched the ball, the lead increased by seven. Virgil Wiggins chased down an onside kick, and Davis burst through the center of the line for a 55-yard score on the next play. White ran for the extra point, upping the advantage to 13-0.
White fell on the second half kickoff at his team’s 48, and Davis bolted down to the IC 42. Two plays later, White again hauled around the left end and didn’t stop until he’d completed a 39-yard touchdown run. Wiggins got the extra point this time for a 21-0 lead. White’s final score came on the last play of the third quarter, a 36-yard replica of his first two scores. C.C. Johnson carried two defenders over the goal line for the final points.
The Junior Midget Saints came within a point of their younger counterparts, as Derek Bennett, Derek Wright and Dominique Patterson scored all the points in a 26-0 win.
The Saints were held without a first down in the first quarter, but they cut loose midway through the second. Hunt Odom tossed a 10-yard quick pass to Wright to reach the Saint 48, and Patterson burned all the way to the Steeler 12 on the next play. He then rushed five yards up the middle, and Bennett ran around the left end for a 6-0 lead.
Wright picked up a Steeler fumble on the IC 19 two plays later, and Patterson and Bennett ran on the next four plays, the last of which was a three-yard rush by Patterson for the score. Odom and Wright connected for the extra point and a 13-0 lead, and Jim Hassell snatched a Steeler fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the IC 42.
A holding penalty knocked the Saints back to midfield, but Odom threw two passes to Wright to quickly reach the Steeler four. Patterson scored on an one-yard plunge, and Bennett had the extra point. Patterson finished out the scoring with a 21-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
Justin Davis scored the lone touchdown as the NS flag team defeated IC 6-0. The Pee-Wee Saints grabbed a 21-6 victory. Byron Taylor gave IC its only win of the day, scoring both touchdowns in a 12-6 Mighty Mite win. Brandon Davis scored for NS.
