Two goals in the span of less than two minutes helped visiting Nansemond-Suffolk Academy escape a hardfought 2-0 win over Stonebridge on Tuesday. After a scoreless first half, Wills Taylor sent an assist to Daniel Curran, then took a breakaway pass from Reid Leonard a minute later for the deciding goals.

The Saints held an 11-7 shot advantage for the first half, but both teams missed out on several scoring chances. About seven minutes into the second, Patrick Whalen smacked a kick down the left sideline, and a Stonebridge player lobbed it into the center.

It landed between Taylor and Curran, and Taylor took the ball and pushed it toward the Cavalier goal. Suddenly he turned and dropped the ball behind him. A charging Curran burned in front of a defender, grabbed the ball and sent it into the left side of the net.

Stonebridge kicked off, and Leonard corralled the ball on the left sideline, midway down the Saints’ side of the field. He dropped a long shot back toward the left side to Taylor, who outraced two defenders and slipped a goal just inside the left corner.

In the net, Joe Vidarte fought off 17 Cavalier shots for his second straight shutout. The Saints will host Catholic on Thursday.
