Martha (Knight) Polson

Mrs. Martha (Knight) Polson died Jan. 1, 2005 at Fatima Hospital in Providence, RI. She was born Jan. 9, 1926 in Nansemond County (now Suffolk). She was a lifetime resident of Suffolk.

Martha attended old East Suffolk Elementary School and High School. She graduated from North Carolina A & T State University, and also did post graduate work at New York University and the University of Virginia extension. Mrs. Polson taught for 33 years in Suffolk, and continued after retirement as a substitute teacher until she was no longer able to teach.

Martha was a member of Old Tynes Street Baptist Church (now Metropolitan Baptist Church). She belonged to the senior choir, the Harvester Missionary Circle, the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and was a founding member of The Smart Set Club.

She was the widow of the late Warren Godwin Polson Sr. Martha leaves one son, Warren Godwin Polson Jr., of Providence, RI; two sisters, Mrs. Irene K. Lawrence of Portsmouth; Mrs. Rhoda K. Griffin and her husband Wilbert of Suffolk, and brother-in-law, Dr. Grady Polson and wife, Thea of Saluda, Va. She also leaves nieces Venus R. Griffin of Washington DC, Andrea R. Mann (and husband Auburn) of Silver Spring, Md., Judge Patricia Satterfield of New York, N.Y., Dr. Janet I. Lawrence of Anchorage, Ak. (who is also Martha’s goddaughter), and nephew Calvin H. Lawrence Jr. (and wife Amanda) of Crowley, Tx., along with many cousins, friends, and former students.

The funeral will be at Metropolitan Baptist church on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.

Dr. Robert L. Hobbs is officiating. A Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Service will be held Monday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Crocker Funeral Home. Interment will be at Carver Cemetery in Suffolk. The family is assembling at Crocker Funeral Home on Tuesday at noon for the processional to the church.
