Road relief may be short-lived

Traffic appears almost back to normal at the intersection of Constance Road and North Main Street.
Late Friday, the city reopened all four lanes of East Constance Road and the northbound lane of North Main Street.
Motorists should enjoy the reprieve because roadwork will resume this week.
On Monday, both southbound lanes on North Main will be closed, said Dennis Craff, spokesman for the city. Signs will be up directing motorists on a short detour, he said.
That’s the latest phase in the ongoing construction and installation of an underground duct system near the intersection, Craff said. Eventually, power and other utility lines will run underground through the duct system.
The roadwork and undergrounding of utilities is one component of the city’s Downtown Initiative Plan, the city’s roadmap for revitalizing downtown Suffolk. Once the work is finished, the city will be installing antique streetlights, landscaping and sidewalks.
