Obici hosts Volunteer Fair and Luncheon

The Obici Volunteers are hosting a Volunteer Fair and Luncheon for volunteers Wednesday, April 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 pm. This is in honor of National Volunteer Week. It will take place on the lower level (garden level) of the hospital. There will be free blood pressure checks, raffles, nutrition information and educational stations to cover infection control, confidentiality and HIPPA, hospital safety codes.

Suffolk DAV soup kitchen

The Suffolk Chapter 5 Soup Kitchen on South Saratoga Street will open Wednesday, April 13 from noon to 1 p.m.

East Suffolk Garden Civic League to meet

The East Suffolk Gardens Civic League will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14 in Tabernacle Christian Church. W.H. Goodman is the president.

Suffolk Red Cross offers pet First Aid

The Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a pet First Aid training course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 16. The cost is $35.

Celebration of Spring Luncheon

The Suffolk Christian Women’s Connection will host a Celebration of Spring Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20 at the Cedar Point Country Club.

Rummage, plant and craft sale

The Magnolia United Methodist Church at 1764 Wilroy Road in Suffolk will hold a Rummage, Plant and Craft sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7. Breakfast, lunch, a bake sale, silent auction, entertainment, children’s games, activities and door prizes will also be offered. The Rev. Mike Derflinger is the pastor.

Local 26 Retiree meeting

At 11 a.m. Monday, April 11, Local 26 will show a movie, the life story of Ray Charles, at the Local 26 Union Hall, located at 509 E. Washington St. The Local 26 retiree meeting will take place at 1 p.m.

Relay for Life team captains meeting

There will be a Relay for Life team captains meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 19 in the Upper School Library

at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.

All team captains are invited to attend. The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life 2005 will be held on May 20-21 at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy beginning at 7 p.m.

Suffolk Woodman to meet

Suffolk Woodman of the World Camp 2 will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, April 11 at the clubhouse, which is located at 1230 Kansas St.

Isle of Wight Relay for Life

University of Lynchburg-Suffolk campus enrolling

The Virginia University of Lynchburg, Suffolk campus is enrolling for the fall semester, which takes place Aug. 30 to Dec. 13. The college is located at the Pleasant Union Baptist Church, 215 Webb St. Registration takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 9 p.m. through May 2. Programs offered include an Associate of Arts and Science degree, certificate in ministry, Bachelor of Arts in religious studies and a master’s of divinity degree. Financial aid is available. The program is approved by the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia.

Hearts and Hammer Dinner

Civil War Weekend chicken dinner

During the Civil War Weekend, the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum will have a chicken dinner (take-out only) from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9 in the parking lot at 326 N. &uot;Just Say No&uot; softball and t-ball league

The Suffolk Department of Parks and Recreation and the East Suffolk Federated Civic League are sponsoring a &uot;Just Say No&uot; Coed Youth Slow-Pitch Softball and T-Ball League. The registration deadline is April 9. The cost is $20 per participant. Registration will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Saturday from 10 to 2 p.m. at Booker T. Washington. Obici Alumni raising funds with barbecue dinner

Every year the Louise Obici Alumni Association puts on a fund raiser to generate money for the Louise Obici School of Nursing Scholarship which is awarded to one or more deserving students, who are pursuing a special certificate, diploma, degree, or post-graduate degree in the nursing field. This year the membership has chosen to offer a Take-Out Barbecue Dinner. The dinner will consist of Carolina BBQ, baked beans, slaw, and a roll. The organization will also have a Bake Sale and Bazaar, featuring desserts and handmade items.

The fund raiser will take place Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the north entrance of the Suffolk Christian Church on North Main St., Suffolk.

The BBQ dinners will cost $6 each, or 2 for $10.

Suffolk’s Day of Wellness

Suffolk’s Day of Wellness will be held from 12 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 10 at King’s Fork Middle School Parks and Recreation’s multi-purpose room. A complimentary chair massage and spa quality treatments for face and body will be provided. Participants can also learn relaxation and breathing exercises, figure analysis, screening and more.

Benefit planned for cancer victim

Family and friends of Russell Parham are hosting a benefit in his honor at the Wakefield Sportsman Club in Wakefield on Saturday, April 16. Russell was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer on Jan. 7 and has been undergoing chemo and radiation therapy since Jan. 14 with mounting medical expenses. Festivities will begin with an auction at 3 p.m. A wide variety of items will be auctioned off including a custom grill, a fishing trip for four, quilts, furniture and much more. Come early to check out the items before the auction begins.

A southern rock band will perform at 7 p.m.
