Chowan Singers at Eureka

Chowan Singers, the premier vocal ensemble of Chowan College, will present a concert at Eureka Baptist Church, 1601 NC 32 North, at 7 p.m. May 1. Repertoire for the concert will include selections from the Renaissance to the present day, including music by noted composers such as George Frederick Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, John Rutter and Lloyd Larson.

The Chowan Singers are under the direction of Dr. Gregory Parker, associate professor of Music, and the director of Choral Activities at Chowan College. Parker holds degrees from Samford University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. In addition to his work as a choral conductor and church musician, Parker has performed extensively as a baritone soloist in operas, oratorios, and recitals.

Chowan College is an undergraduate, coeducational, church-related college in northeastern North Carolina in the historic town of Murfreesboro.

Historic St. Luke's Church

Historic St. Luke's Church, 14477 Benn's Church Blvd., Smithfield, will be host to the Hampton Roads Flute Choir Concert, a Waterfront Wave Event, on Sunday, May 1, at 4 p.m. The group will be playing some original pieces written for flute choirs as well as transcriptions of famous masterworks.

Their repertoire includes "Spring" from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, "Adventures in Space" by Ricky Lombardo, and selections from "Greek Tableaux" by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda, to name a few.

The flute choir is composed of 15 adult performers from throughout Tidewater.

The voices of the choir include piccolo, C flute, alto and bass flute.
