Two sets of Lakeland nines each had equally difficult evenings on Tuesday as the Cavalier baseball team lost to Oscar Smith in five innings, 14-1; and on the softball diamond, a last inning rally was not enough for the Lady Cavaliers, who fell to the Lady Tigers, 5-1.

After scoring two runs in the first, OS broke the game wide open in the third, scoring eight runs, four of which were unearned. The Tigers added plated four more in the top of the fifth on one hit, one Lakeland error, and four walks.

The lone Cavalier tally came in the fifth when Buddy Wirt scored on a bases loaded wild pitch.

Lakeland (3-11, 1-9) travels to Great Bridge on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. start.

The Lady Cavaliers got an admirable pitching performance through the first six innings as Lindsay Kelly held the Lady Tigers to 2-0 going to the last inning. But like on the baseball diamond, one inning made the big difference for the visitors.

In the top of the seventh, the Lady Tigers put together a three run rally with a one out, two RBI triple being the centerpiece.

Cleanup batter Erica Rimasse led of the Lakeland seventh with a slicing line drive down the right field line that turned into an inside-the-park home run, making the score 5-1.

The Lady Cavs’ last-ditch rally died with Claudia Graham on second and Rachel Evans on third.

Kelly threw all seven innings, striking out seven Lady Tigers and Evans was two-for-three at the plate.

Lakeland (2-7, 1-6) also looks ahead to a match up at Great Bridge on Friday.
