The Whaleyville Ruritan Club is sponsoring a Whaleyville Community Day on Saturday with a parade starting at 9:30 a.m. on Whaleyville Boulevard. This year’s Community Day features arts and crafts, business expos, live entertainment, antiques and plenty of delicious food. Vendor spaces are now available at the Whaleyville Community Center. Art show to benefit Habitat Saturday

From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, artists from across the country will come together to explore the concept of &uot;Home&uot; with arts, crafts and food. Many events are planned throughout the day, ending with a live auction by Mayor Bobby L. Ralph at 4 p.m.. Art created especially for this occasion will be auctioned. A portion of all sales will benefit Habitat For Humanity, a program that has enabled dozens of local low-income families reap the benefits of homeownership.

The artwork in this show has, as a central theme, the concept of home, its meaning to the individual artist, its concept as a place of comfort, respite, fear and even the impact of a life without a place to call one’s own. SPOR-AC holding signups

The Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the SPOR-AC Summer Leadership Program from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays July 11 to Aug. 4 at Nansemond River High. The program offers a variety of team-building activities, computers, educational seminars and field trips. Parents must have completed registration form, proof of child’s age and a $20 fee. Only checks and money orders payable to Ronald Williams, treasurer, will be accepted. Children must be between 12-15 years. Multi-family yard sale

Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Station, 300 King’s Highway, will have a multi-family yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Items available are toys, children’s clothes, household items, sports cards, and miscellaneous items. There will also be a bake sale and lunch will be available. All proceeds will go to from the lunch will go to benefit the Fire Department.

LHS Class of ’95

Lakeland High School’s Class of 1995 will have a class reunion Friday, Oct. 21-23. On Friday, Oct. 21, there will be a meet and greet at the Homecoming game with an after party at the Holland Community Center (all alumni are invited on Friday nigh). The cost is $5 per alumni at Holland Community Center. On Saturday, Oct. 22, Family and Friends Day takes place at Lakeland. Festivities include dinner in Norfolk (not included in cost) and a cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. On Sunday, Oct. 23, the Class of ’95, will be attending service at the Rev. Boston Butt Sale

March of Dimes bass tournament

Join Suffolk Parks and Recreation at Lone Star Lakes Park on Saturday, May 14 for the annual March of Dimes Bass Fishing Tournament from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This event cost is $25 per boat with a two person per boat maximum.

Relay for Life golf tournament

The Supreme Foods Relay for Life team will be sponsoring a golf tournament on May 10 at Sleepy Hole Golf Course. Lunch is at noon with tee off between 12:30 and 1 p.m. Cost will be $60 per player and includes green fees, cart, lunch, snacks, & prizes.

The Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Spring fish fry &uot;Filet of Trout&uot; from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Fire Station #8, 6235 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk. STOP offering assistance

STOP, a non-profit organization, is offering weatherization assistance. The program assists income-eligible households with weatherizing their homes. March against drugs

Obici Alumni raising funds

Every year the Louise Obici Alumni Association puts on a fundraiser to generate money for the Louise Obici School of Nursing Scholarship which is awarded to one or more deserving students, who are pursuing a special certificate, diploma, degree, or post-graduate degree in the nursing field. This year the membership has chosen to offer a Take-Out Barbecue Dinner. The dinner will consist of Carolina BBQ, baked beans, slaw, and a roll. The organization will also have a bake sale and bazaar, featuring desserts and handmade items.

The fundraiser will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the north entrance of the Suffolk Christian Church on North Main St., Suffolk.

The BBQ dinners will cost $6 each, or 2 for $10.

The Wakefield Foundation Inc., Center for the Arts, will host its 17th annual Flower and Art Show on the evening of May 7. This year’s show will feature the work of more than 50 artists, each artwork accompanied by a floral arrangement designed to produce a unified, harmonious display. The reception, open to the public, will start at 7 p.m. Admission at the door will be $10 per person. The reception will be catered and musical entertainment will be provided by Robin Welch, classical guitarist, an instructor at Hampton University.

From noon to 4 p.m. Family Day takes place Sunday, May 8 from noon until 4 p.m. Family Day is less formal than the opening reception and is designed to allow children and their parents the opportunity to view the exhibit together. A light reception will be served and admission will be $2 per person.

The local schools and groups have been invited to have their students tour the exhibition from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Monday, May 9.

The Flower and Art Show has been a yearly event for the Wakefield Foundation since 1988. Student, Professional and amateur artists are allowed to submit one work each to be included in the show. All media are acceptable and ribbons are awarded in various categories. In addition, a monetary Best in Show award is given.

Delta Kappa Gamma to award scholarship

The Alpha Theta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, is offering two $1,500 awards to two Suffolk high school seniors.

This award, known as the Gladys H. Yates Award, is given to honor the memory of Yates, a teacher who taught in the Suffolk Public School system for many years. Yates, a past president of Alpha Theta Chapter, made many contributions to education.

The applicant must be a senior from a high school within the city of Suffolk, accepted by an accredited college or community college, an honor graduate have a B average or 3.0 or above, planning to pursue a career in teaching and a resident of Suffolk.
