Dr. Alfred L. Franklin Sr.

Alfred Lloyd Franklin Sr., was born May 24, 1927 in Suffolk to the late Robert and Gertrude Franklin.

On April 20, 2005 at 1:38 a.m., Alfred was called to eternal rest at North Shore University in Plainview, N.Y.

Alfred graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Suffolk.

In 1946, Alfred joined the United States Army/Air Force where he served his country and was honorably discharged in 1949. He attended West Virginia State College and graduated with a B.S. degree in economics. He later attended Seton Hall University in New Jersey, where he earned his master’s degree in economics. Alfred had an ambition for learning. He continued his education at the New School of Social Research in New York City and earned his doctorate in economics.

Alfred married Shirley Lowe and from this union, six children were born. In 1970, Alfred and Shirley relocated their growing family to Amityville, Long Island.

Alfred was the first black research analyst to be employed by Alcoa Aluminum Co. He was later employed by the city of New York Department of Human Resources. He held the position of supervisor for more than 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was privileged to have had Shirley Chisholm as a co-worker before she entered politics.

Alfred joined Hollywood Baptist Church of Christ under the spiritual leadership of Pastor Andy C. Lewter Sr., where he worked faithfully as a trustee and a member of the Kings Men. He was a member for approximately 34 years until his health failed.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Clay Franklin, and two sisters, Thelma and Mildred Franklin. Alfred’s legacy carries on through cherished memories left with his loving and devoted wife Shirley; three sons, Mark, Allen (Deaneen), and Alfred Jr.; three daughters, Robin, Julie and Shawna (Shakem); one brother, Jack Franklin; two sisters, Vivian Boyette and Gloria Richards; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

A funeral was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 24, 2005 at Hollywood Baptist Church of Christ in Amityville, N.Y. The interment was in Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y., with the Rev. Andy C. Lewter Sr. and Bishop Andy C. Lewter Jr. officiating.
