Bail denied in child porn case

Suffolk Circuit Court Judge Westbrook Parker on Thursday denied bond to a man charged with more than 200 counts of producing child pornography.

James Haidle, 38, of Chesapeake will remain in Western Tidewater Regional Jail while awaiting trial. The former Suffolk resident has also been charged with sexual misconduct charges in Chesapeake.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Marie Walls, who is prosecuting the case, told the court that two counts of indecent liberties and crimes against nature are pending against Haidle in Chesapeake. One of those charges allegedly involves sexual misconduct with a female juvenile relative.

&uot;He groomed her with sexual innuendo,&uot; she said after the hearing, quoting what the girl told Chesapeake police. &uot;He said he was a Wiccan, and that she was to be initiated.&uot;

The process involved Haidle and the girl undressing, which eventually moved to groping and intercourse.

&uot;The (child pornography) charges are shocking,&uot; Parker said, &uot;but what is more shocking is the nature of the evidence.

&uot;This episode about religion and the steps he went through to explain it to (the victim) shows me that he is a danger to society.&uot;

Haidle was arrested in February on the child pornography charges involving the relative in question, and another juvenile female family member.

Last August, the second girl came to his home from her residence in New Jersey for a visit. Over the next month, Haidle allegedly snapped dozens of photos of the teenage girls engaged in a variety of sexual positions, Walls said.

In asking Parker to deny bond, Walls noted that the photos did not come out the first time they were developed, so Haidle borrowed a camera from a local preacher and re-took them. She also said that one of the girls had been in Chesapeake recently, and that the other lives in Virginia Beach.

In asking Parker for bond, defense attorney Robert Wegman noted that Haidle, a father of three daughters, hadn’t tried to escape the charges.

&uot;He’s been a resident of the area for over 20 years,&uot; Wegman said, citing Haidle’s employment at a video game store in the Western Branch area. &uot;This is not a case where he grabbed a girl off the street in a random act.

&uot;The alleged victims are nowhere around, and they won’t be around. Nothing has happened, or will happen.

Haidle is scheduled to be arraigned on the Suffolk charges on June 23. He is slated to be tried in Chesapeake in July.
