Staff Report
Dual democratic and republican primary elections for state offices are being held on June 14.
Primaries are required by the political parties to determine the nominee for an office when more than one party member files for the seat, said Patsy Parker, registrar in Suffolk.
The Democratic Party will hold its election to determine the candidate for lieutenant governor, she said.
The Republican Party’s primary will decide who runs for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.
According to the State Board of Elections, voters should be advised:
Virginia law states that a citizen may vote in only one primary election.
When a voter arrives at the polling place, the voter will be asked to indicate whether he or she is voting in the democratic or republican primary and will be given the corresponding ballot.
The voter’s declaration is in no way to be interpreted as an oath of party membership or loyalty.
