Derek J. Hayes of Suffolk, now stationed in Camp Pendleton, Calif., was recently promoted to corporal.

Derek is the son of Natalie Smith and grandson of Carrie Hayes and Lena Bryant.

Derek joined the U.S. Marines on June 17, 2003.
