A creepy killer, June 28, 2005

Creepy.

That's the only word I can think of to describe watching Dennis Rader last night on News Night on CNN. He's the dude who's admitted to being the BTK killer, who terrorized parts of Witchita in 1970's and 80s.

I normally don't watch News Night. At 10, I'm usually watching something on Comedy Central n Chappelle Show, South Park, Reno 911. Last night, however, Blue Collar Comedy was on and I don't watch that because being from West Virginia, some of their stuff hits a little too close to home if you know what I mean.

News Night devoted nearly the entire first half hour to his court appearance Monday. It was eerie listening to Rader calmly describe the 10 murders he accused of. He talked it about it like a normal person would talk about mowing their grass.

What really made it bad was that he appeared to be so normal, even kind. I'm sure conservative Kansas will give him what's coming to him.

I apparently made some folks upset at the parks and rec department Sunday with the column I wrote about the poor attendance at Friday's concert and Constant's Wharf.

Of course, that wasn't my intent. My only goal was to be helpful, to help point out how to make things a little better. The News-Herald would love to join forces with the city and partner with it to promote such events around Suffolk and I'm formally extending the offer.
