James Harrell

James &uot;Newman&uot; &uot;Bum&uot; Harrell beloved husband, father, uncle, and friend, passed away July 3, 2005, after fighting a courageous battle against cancer.
Born Jan. 10, 1939, in Isle of Wight County and grew up in Portsmouth. Newman was the son of the late Walter Carr and Ida Byrd Babb Harrell. He worked for the city of Portsmouth for 35 years in the Traffic Engineering Department and was a member and Deacon of Port Norfolk Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Rogers Harrell and daughter Victoria &uot;Vykki&uot; C. Harrell of Suffolk; sisters Barbara Bowles and husband Donald of Suffolk, Virginia Collins husband William, Faye Holland and husband Pete all of Portsmouth, two brothers Reginald Harrell of Laurium, Mich. and William Harrell wife Gwenn of Dinwiddie and numerous nieces and nephews and special friends Mr. and Mrs. Emory Sparks and family.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad St. Portsmouth, by Rev. Terry Taylor, Dr. Ector Hamrick, and Rev Robert Earl Thompson. A visitation will be from7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at R. W. Baker Funeral Home & Crematory, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad St., Portsmouth, VA or to &uot;Relay for Life&uot; at American Cancer Society c/o Vykki Harrell, 604 Constance Woods Dr., Suffolk, VA 23434.
