While attending Lakeland boys volleyball games this season, don’t look for stars. Don’t look for standouts. Because according to Jason Sawyer, there won’t be any.

&uot;We don’t have any stars,&uot; he said, warming up for practice. &uot;Everybody plays together. We’ll try to do better than we did last year.&uot;

Last year, the team defeated Nansemond River for the first time of the millennium.

&uot;We’ve got to get that done again this year,&uot; Sawyer said. The teams battle again at Lakeland Sept. 27.

Senior Buddy Wirt hopes to go even farther.

&uot;I want to make it to districts,&uot; he said. &uot;Basically everybody here played last year, and we’ve been working hard. It’s important to keep working on teamwork.&uot;

The work might help newcomer Durrell Foreman on another team; he’d like to use the same skills when basketball comes in November.

&uot;It’s kind of fun to try something new,&uot; he said. &uot;I do a lot of jumping and hand-eye coordination. It should help out a lot. I add a little height and jumping ability; I’m going to get up there and do some spiking and blocking.&uot;
