Clubs’ donations raise

About a month ago, someone stepped to the front of the Suffolk Ruritan Club and told the club about their neighbor.

They talked about a woman named Candi Williams, who had recently been afflicted with multiple myloma cancer, a blood cancer. Her medications run roughly $3,500 a month, and her medical insurance has already been exhausted for the year.

The club didn’t hesitate.

&uot;We all voted to help them,&uot; said president Eric Clarey. &uot;That’s what we’re all about, giving back to the community.&uot;

But the Suffolk club, which raised $3,200 for Candi, wasn’t alone. Last week at the Ruritan Summer Meeting for Zone One at the Suffolk Armory, the King’s Fork Club (of which one of Candi’s relatives is a member, gave a donation as well. Clubs from Driver, Cypress Chapel, Whaleyville, Eastover-Wilroy and Corapeake also made donations. In less than two months, the area has raised roughly $6,500 for Candi, and Clarey said that more would be coming in from other clubs and outside sources soon.
