Callis story update #110; Aug. 19, 2005

We reported a couple Sundays back about Sam Callis' troubles with the DMV.

After being ticketed for driving too slowly and impeding traffic, Callis ultimately lost his license. This despite the fact that the ticket was thrown out of court.

In the past week or so, a couple people close to the situation have contacted me off the record about it. They said there was more to the story than what we reported in the paper.

According to both, they tried hard to work with Callis and assist him in his dealings with the DMV. The bottom line, however, was that he failed to show up for a driving test at the time stipulated by the DMV, which was clearly spelled out to him.

He missed the time, apparently because of an illness that required hospitalization. Apparently, that is immaterial to the DMV.

Both said they will continue to assist Callis to see if he can regain his license.

But it's something you might want to bear in mind in dealing with the DMV: If they contact you and tell you to do something at a certain time, you'd darn well better do it unless you want to wind up walking home.
