Creeping me out #110; Aug. 18, 2005

My 12-year-old daughter, as usual, had control of the television remote Tuesday night. So we watched the Teen Choice Awards on Fox.
It was pretty neat, a lot more casual and fun than the normal awards show. However, I noticed a trend early on that disturbed me somewhat, if not downright creeping me out.
All the presenters were in pairs n there were no solo presenters. And invariably, it was a young girl aged 14 to 18, paired with some 40-year-old guy.
I don't know what organizers of this thing were thinking, but it just felt perverted to me n Rob Schneider trading banter with Hillary Duff, and David Spade with that little girl he was with.
I once heard a middle-aged comedian say that Britney Spears' fan base was made up of 12-year-old girls and 40-year-old guys n meaning of course perverted older guys.
Of course, older men and younger women is nothing new for Hollywood, but these are not women n they're little girls –
and as such should not be paired with grown men. I don't know what must have been going through my daughter's head as she watched it, but I hope it went over it.
In the future the Teen Choice Awards should confine its casting decisions to teens. If it were truly a "teen's choice" they wouldn't be choosing these old dudes.
