Ryan Hathaway scored two touchdowns and threw for another as the Bennett’s Creek Mighty Mite squad opened its season with a 25-12 victory over visiting Downtown Athletic Association (DA) Saturday at John Yeates Middle School.

Brian Johnson scored early for the Warriors, and Hathaway tossed a touchdown pass to Keon Roberts to jump ahead 12-0, but Deshawn Wellington cut the lead in half with a touchdown run to make it 12-6 at the midway point.

Early in the third quarter, the Warriors were faced with a fourth-and-seven at their own 32. Then Hathway took the snap, hurried around the left end, and motored all the way down to the DA 24. On the next play, Nathan Collins took the handoff and burned toward the right sideline. As he angled toward the side inside the 10, four defenders barreled down on Collins, who spun around, kept moving forward, and toppled into the endzone.

The Warriors got the ball back, but again had a fourth down situation at the DA 40. Then Hathway went back around the right end, charged all the way to pay dirt, and tossed the extra point pass to Brandon Savage for BC’s final score. Daronte’ Hamlin scored DA’s final touchdown.

In the Junior Pee-Wee contest, Shannon Evans and Rausheeim Thompson scored two touchdowns each as BC defeated Chesapeake, 26-0.

After Evans crossed the goal line once and Thompson twice in the first half, the Warriors started the second half at their own 36. An offsides penalty knocked them back to the 34, but Thompson broke down the left side for 30 yards. A few plays later, he rumbled down the 11, and Thompson got around the left end for a touchdown. Evans scored the extra point.
