More than two dozen firefighters spent Sunday afternoon battling a blaze that swept through a vacant peanut processing plant near downtown.

Firefighters found the five-story Ponds Brothers Peanuts facility on County Street fully engulfed in flames when they arrived around 1 p.m., said Battalion Chief Chuck Knight, spokesman for the Suffolk Fire Department.

The building is no longer in use by the company, he added. Work crews have been in the process of dismantling the facility for the past few months.

No one was injured in the fire, Knight said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
