Continuing the prowess that won her the Suffolk Invitational tournament Most Valuable Player honor last weekend, Nicole Klee knocked in a hat trick as Lakeland stayed perfect in Southeastern District competition Wednesday with a 4-0 defeat of visiting Western Branch.
With 16 minutes to go in the first half, the Lady Cavaliers got a corner shot, which Chelsey Salmon sent to Lynsey Daughtrey just outside the circle. Daughtrey slipped a pass to the right to Klee, who dashed into the circle and sent a worm-burner into the left side of the cage.
Almost 11 minutes later, Salmon dribbled into the Branch circle and passed to Stephanie Owen near the left post. Owen sent the ball across the mouth of the goal, where Sara Mazzone batted it in. At the two-minute mark, Klee got a pass in the center of the field, and charged toward the left sideline. Reaching the circle, she angled back in toward the goal, faked out three defenders, and smacked in her second goal.
Five minutes into the second half, the Lady Bruins were called for a foul just outside the circle. Salmon reared back and smacked a shot into a mass of players, and the ball ricocheted high into the air. Klee quickly corralled it and whacked in her team's final goal.
The Lady Cavaliers will visit Hickory next Wednesday.
King’s Fork wasn't as lucky, falling 3-0 to host Great Bridge. The Lady Bulldogs will host Deep Creek on Wednesday.
