The Booker T. Washington Alumni Association will meet on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m at the Morgan Memorial Library on West Washington Street.

The executive board will meet at noon.

Girl Scout Fest 2005

Come join the fun at Girl Scout Fest 2005 on Saturday, Sept. 24, from noon to 4:00 p.m., at the ODU Constant Convocation Center.

Over 50 museum and community exhibits and hands-on activities will be there for the entire family.

Launch rockets with NASA, see Mad Science theater perform on stage, jump in a moonwalk and more.

Admission is $3 at the door; free for kids four and under.

No charge for parking.

The event is sponsored by NASA Langley Research Center at WB-TV 33.

Chuckatuck VFD Fish Fry

The Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department is having a fish fry on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $9 on the day of the event.

Filet of fish, potatoes, cole slaw, hush puppies and iced tea will be the fare.

King’s Fork Woman’s Club

The King’s Fork Woman’s Club will begin the new club year with a salad supper at King’s Fork Community House on Monday, September 26, at 6:30 p.m.

Sarah Willman will lead the devotional and Jeanne Banks and Pat McIntosh will serve as hostesses.

Members are requested to bring a salad for the supper. A monetary donation will be collected to purchase school supplies.

Nansemond Parkway Civic League

Help Wanted

The Suffolk Literacy Council needs volunteers to tutor adults in basic reading skills.

The next workshop is Sept. 26 and 27, and Oct. 3 and 4 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. each evening.

The workshops are held at Suffolk Christian Church at 216 North Main Street.

There is a $10 fee for books and materials.

Chesapeake Bay Poets will be holding an open-mic night at Java 149, 149 N. Main Street, Suffolk, at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.

Turkey-Ham Shoots

Bennetts Creek Ruritan will be holding Turkey-Ham Shoots every Saturday evening from Oct. 1 through Nov. 26.

The shoots will be at a new location, 5433 Shoulders Hill Road.

The benefits help the Driver Volunteer Fire Department, Boy Scout Troop 16 and the North Suffolk YMCA.

Tickets go on sale each Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and the shoot starts at 6 p.m.

Whaleyville V. F. D. fish fry

The Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a fish fry Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Cost is $6 per plate; eat in or take out.

Trout fillet, cole slaw, boiled potatoes and hush puppies will be served, along with a bake sale from the Women of Whaleyville United Methodist Church.

Tickets will be sold at the door, or see any V. F. D. member.

State Fair bus trip

St. Timothy Baptist Church is sponsoring a bus to the State Fair on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The bus will leave the church at 7:00 a.m. and leave from the fair at 6:00 p.m.

Cost is $30.

Laurel Garden Club

The Laurel Garden Club is having a &uot;Plant Swap&uot; program Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 1517 Woodspath Lane with Peggy Shaw and Marilyn Steele as hostesses.

Exhibits will be &uot;Colors of Fall,&uot; which will be fall flowers in a pumpkin or pumpkin container with foliage; and an Open Class.

The Laurel Garden Club will be having a special meeting Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. at West End Baptist Church on West Washington Street.

The program will be &uot;Brent and Becky’s Bulbs&uot; and it is sponsored by the Suffolk Garden Council.

Yard Sale

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Ivor Rescue Squad will hold a yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Ivor Rescue Squad building.

The Suffolk Volunteer Fire Co. Turkey Shoot will start Oct. 14 and run through Nov. 19 on Friday and Saturday nights from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
