Last-minute score lifts BC

Shannon Evans snuck six yards for a touchdown with 15 seconds left and Tyler Robinson barreled through for the extra point as Bennett’s Creek’s Junior Pee-Wee team came back for a 14-13 victory over Portsmouth Inner-City Saturday at John Yeates Middle School.

After the Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 15-yard pitch from Evans to Rausheeim Thompson early in the game, IC scored a touchdown on the last play of the first quarter (but missed the extra point) and got ahead early in the fourth quarter. With four minutes to play, BC got the ball on the IC 44.

Thompson charged 11 yards, and a false start penalty moved BC to the IC 24. Robinson churned out 12 yards in two plays to get a first down on the 16 with 2:30 to go.

Evans ran five yards and Thompson got three more. But Evans was sacked at the 10 with 1:20 to go, leaving BC with one play to go four yards.

Evans handed off to Robinson, who rumbled through the right side of the line, and fell nearly in line with the first down marker. The chains came onto the field, and he’d made it by a football. But he was stopped for no gain on the next play, and there were 25 seconds to go.

Evans faded back, looking for an open receiver. Then he saw that the left side of the field was wide open, and hurtled toward the sideline. Two defenders arrived half a second too late, and he toppled into the endzone to tie the game.

&uot;I saw the endzone, and I thought I’d have a better chance of running it,&uot; he said.

On the extra point, Robinson took the handoff and hustled through the left side of the line. He bounced off a pair of tacklers, fell forward, and landed with the goal line at his waist.

&uot;With all those people crowding the line, I didn’t think I would make it,&uot; he said. &uot;I just dove.&uot;

The ensuing kickoff ricocheted off an IC player’s shoulder, and BC recovered to ice the contest.

In other action, the BC Mighty Mite squad defeated IC 9-0, with Jacob Crull scoring the touchdown and Brandon Savage an extra point. BC defeated Suffolk Inner-City 12-6 in Midget competition, with Rock Artis getting both scores. The Flag team beat Norfolk 25-0, and BC’s Junior Midgets came out on top over Portsmouth, 19-12. Justin Watson, Malik Bynum and Jaquan Demiel crossed the goal line.

Over at Churchland, two Nansemond-Suffolk teams came out on top, as the Mighty Mite and Pee-Wee Saints won.
