State Fair bus trip

St. Timothy Baptist Church is sponsoring a bus to the State Fair on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The bus will leave the church at 7 a.m. and leave from the fair at 6:00 p.m.

Cost is $30.

Help Wanted

The Suffolk Literacy Council needs volunteers to tutor adults in basic reading skills.

The next workshop is Oct. 3 and 4 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each evening.

The workshops are held at Suffolk Christian Church at 216 North Main Street.

There is a $10 fee for books and materials.

Nansemond-Suffolk NAACP

The Nansemond-Suffolk Branch NAACP will meet Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the East Suffolk Community Center, 134 South Sixth Street at 7 p.m.

Laurel Garden Club

The Laurel Garden Club is having a &uot;Plant Swap&uot; program Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 1517 Woodspath Lane with Peggy Shaw and Marilyn Steele as hostesses.

Bring two or more plants (house or perennial).

Exhibits will be &uot;Colors of Fall,&uot; which will be fall flowers in a pumpkin or pumpkin container with foliage; and an Open Class.

The Laurel Garden Club will be having a special meeting Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. at West End Baptist Church on West Washington Street.

The program will be &uot;Brent and Becky’s Bulbs&uot; and it is sponsored by the Suffolk Garden Council.

Yard Sale

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Ivor Rescue Squad will hold a yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Ivor Rescue Squad building.

Tables are available for $10.

Breakfast and lunch will be available.

The Bethlehem Ruritan Club, 140 Manning Road, will be having their Fall BBQ Pork Dinner, catered by Leon Nixon Catering, on Friday, Oct. 14.

Suffolk Volunteer Fire Company Turkey Shoot

The Suffolk Volunteer Fire Co. Turkey Shoot will start Oct. 14 and run through Nov. 19 on Friday and Saturday nights from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The location is on Route 460 behind Oliver’s Auto (3624 Pruden Boulevard).

Pig Pickin’ for Hurricane Katrina donations

The Suffolk Pentecostal Holiness Church, 100 Kilby Shores Drive, is hosting a city wide &uot;All you can Eat Pig Pickin’&uot; Oct. 15 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 5-12 and free for children under five.

There will be games and entertainment in addition to the delicious meal.

All proceeds and donations will go to Hurricane Katrina victims.

The Suffolk Shrine Club will be holding their Famous Fish Fry on Sunday, October 23, 2005 from 1 to 5 p.m. Eat in or Take out. Price is $7 per person and children eight years and under are free.

Girl Scout tea party

This event is geared toward girls in kindergarten, but others are welcome to come.
