Lakeland fired a 325 on the first day of the Eastern Region golf tournament Monday morning at Sleepy Hole Golf Course.

The Cavaliers sit in a fifth-place tie (out of 12 teams) with fellow Southeastern school Great Bridge with Wednesday’s final round of play still to go.

Two Beach District teams, Cox (303) and Kellam (304) sit in the two team qualifying positions after day one; Wade Wawner (Kellam) is the individual leader with a three-under par 69.

Ben Hunter (78), Nick Howell (79), Josh Winslow (81) and Ryan West (87) were the four scoring Cavaliers.

In addition to the team aspect of the tournament, the six lowest individuals not on the two qualifying teams, will play at the Group AAA state tournament to be held Oct. 11 and 12 at the Piedmont Golf Club in Haymarket.

Nansemond River’s Nolan Butler shot 79 and sits one stroke behind the cut line, which is 78 at the end of round one. Hunter, Howell and Winslow all remain in range of becoming individual qualifiers should the Lakeland team not make a Wednesday comeback.

King’s Fork’s David Brown (81) and Shane Doherty (86) and River’s Rashad Hunt (84), were the other local players involved in Monday’s action.
