Nettie Louise (Berry) Steward, 81, died Oct. 9, 2005 in Mariner Health Care of Catonsville, MD. A native of Gates County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Hersey and Rebecca Berry and the widow of Paul Steward.

She was a retired domestic worker. She former resided in Suffolk and was a faithful member of Zion United Church of Christ.

Her two sons, Otis Steward and Paul Steward, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Bessie Herbert, Catherine Myrick of Baltimore, and Ada Steward of Suffolk; a sister, Susie Bell Manley of Newport News; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Betty Joe Steward of Chesapeake; a son-in-law, Melvin Herbert; a brother-in-law, Herbert Steward; a devoted friend, Clara Marie Adams; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, by the Rev. Joseph M. Copeland of Zion United Church of Christ, 5200 Quaker Drive. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 11:30 a.m. The family will be at the home of Beverly Steward, 626 Brooke Ave. Crocker Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
