Mary Rose and Ashley Pinzon said farewell to King’s Fork field hockey with goals Thursday afternoon as their team defeated visiting Bethel 2-0. Randi Zemp also played her final match.

After the first half ended scoreless, the Lady Bulldogs got a corner stroke just over five minutes into the second. Brandi Novak hit it out to Whitney Witt, who passed to Rose. Rose blasted a shot off the post and it went to Novak, who passed back to Rose for the goal.

About four minutes later, Novak passed another corner to Pinzon, who reared back and hammered a shot that bounced off the keeper’s leg and trickled into the net.

&uot;It feels good,&uot; said Rose, who plans to attend Christopher Newport University. Pinzon plans to go to Old Dominion University, Zemp to Virginia Tech. &uot;I’m going to miss these girls so much. It was important to win, because we had to prove to ourselves that we became a better team over the season.&uot;

Fork’s city-mates, Lakeland and Nansemond River, will move on to the Southeastern District tournament beginning Wednesday at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Lakeland will face Western Branch, while River takes on Great Bridge. After wrapping up their fifth consecutive regular season title last week, the Lady Cavaliers are already guaranteed a spot in regional competition, and the Lady Warriors have been there with them the past two years.
