A man accused of deliberately burning his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son is facing criminal charges, and Suffolk police are asking for assistance in locating him.

A grand jury on Wednesday indicted Reshawn Lamont Phillips, 28, with malicious wounding and child neglect/abuse-serious injury for burning the toddler.

The grand jury also handed down indictments charging the child’s mother, Jennifer Renea King, 29, of Stacey Drive, with child abuse/neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police began investigating the incident on June 20, after the child’s father, while picking up the toddler for a weekend visit, noticed the burns, said Lt. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department. He took the child to Obici Hospital, where physicians determined that the youngster had multiple second-degree burns on his buttocks, she said.

Experts believe the burns were caused by a hot frying pan, said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Marie Walls, who is prosecuting the case.

The charges against King stem from her allegedly neglecting to seek medical treatment for the child’s burns, Walls added.

Phillips is also wanted for an outstanding probation violation, George said.

Police notified the Child Protective Services, which conducted its own investigation, according to George.

Phillips is described as a black male, 5’8”, 190 lbs.
