Virginia Griffin Cross

Virginia Griffin Cross was born Jan. 9, 1914, and died on Nov. 21, 2005. She was a daughter of the late Mallie Johnson Griffin and Joseph Cephus Griffin of Suffolk.
She was formerly of Newport News and had been a resident of Williamsburg for the past two years. She will be remembered as a vivacious, bright and warm friend and active in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Virginia and Edwin were members of the First Methodist Church in Newport News.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Major (USA ret.) Edwin S. Cross; two sisters, Edna G. Beale and Doris G. Sheehan and two brothers, Causey and Kline Griffin.
She is survived by her sister, Katherine G. Morris of Grandbury, Tex.; sister-in-law, Sarah S. Griffin of Suffolk; three nieces, Judith B. Bankit of Williamsburg, Betty Jo Potts of Grandbury, Tex. and Deborah Sheehan of Tucson, Ariz. and nine nephews, E.C. Beale of Hollister, Mo., Joseph Griffin, Jimmy Griffin, Sidney Griffin, David Griffin, Gregory Griffin and Wayne Griffin, all of Suffolk, Thomas Griffin of Chesapeake and William Sheehan of Beaufort, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Nov. 23, 2005 at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. David Ford of New Town United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, assisted by Rev. Wade Trump of Jamestown Christian Fellowship in Williamsburg. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
