An overturned propane truck on Bennetts Pasture Road Monday morning caused several families to be evacuated from the nearby Warrenton neighborhood.

Just before 11:30 a.m., a man driving an A&B Propane truck, carrying roughly 2,500 gallons of propane, between Driver Lane and St. Andrews Drive somehow flipped the truck into a nearby field. The driver was not seriously hurt, but several police and fire units were called to the scene, as was a Hazardous Materials team.

The road remained closed at 4 p.m. and officials hoped to have it opened back up early in the evening. A shelter was set up at John Yeates Middle School for evacuated residents.

Because of the flammable capabilities of the gas, a hose was set up near the downed truck and sprayed, while workers kept their distance while plotting the solution. Houses on Driver, St. Andrews, Charlemagne Road and other areas were evacuated, and John Yeates Middle School students who lived in the affected places couldn’t go straight home.

&uot;It only really involved five students,&uot; said Yeates principal Doug Dohey. &uot;We called their parents to come and get them. Everybody else could go home at the normal times.&uot;
