Assembly approves basic plan for arms reduction, including atomic bomb

NEW YORK n The General Assembly of the United Nations today gave final approval to a basic plan for worldwide arms reduction and then rejected a proposal for an immediate international troop census.

The arms limitation plan was approved unanimously amid a wave of applause. In rejecting an immediate troop census, the assembly overrode vigorous Russian opposition.

By vote of 26 to 6, the 54-nation body decided to refer the question of troop and arms data to the Security Council with a recommendation that the council decide what information member nations should be asked to report.

The Russians have insisted on an immediate accounting of all troops stationed outside their home territories.

Tuesday tentatively set for school, council meeting

A meeting between the finance committee of the City Council and its counterpart in the School Board has been tentatively slated for 8 o’clock Tuesday night in the Municipal Building to re-examine the teacher supplemental pay issue.

The finance committee of the City Council, L.H. Cathey, chairman and W.F. Whitley instructed City Manager W.R. Woodbury to communicate with the School Board advancing Tuesday night for a convenient date.

Holland Ruritan Club names Johnson president

Clyde G. Johnson was elected as president of the Holland Ruritan Club Thursday night in a special session in conjunction with the district convention of Ruritans at Suffolk Christian Church.

Other officers elected were Horace Thomas, vice president; Thorburn Smith, secretary; C.W. Howell Jr., treasurer; Rev. R.E. Crutchfield, chaplain; J.T. Harrell, sergeant at arms; and A.J. Holland, director.

Suffolk girls beaten, 28-27

With Dewey Howell dropping his 15 points, the Suffolk Varsity Club kept rolling along on the basketball court last night, defeating the Carrsville Independents, 51-35, for their fourth straight win. The undefeated local team had no trouble winning the free scoring contest.

After leading for three quarters, Coach Willard Freeman’s Suffolk Sextet failed to tally the fourth period with the Carrsville Girls winning 28-27 on Oda Dixon’s last minute field goal.

Twelve Suffolk boys saw action in the nightcap with Dewey Howell sinking seven double deckers and a charity shot for 15 points. Teddy Hanel dropped in five two-pointers.
