No budget hearing

I’ve apparently misunderstood somewhat what is happening at tomorrow’s City Council meeting and as a result, passed incorrect information on here yesterday.

According to reporter Allison Williams, who covers city council and was kind of snooty in her explanation, while City Council will be presented with the budget tonight or Wednesday, and it will be discussed at their work session Wednesday afternoon, there is no public hearing on the city’s budget set for tonight.

There is, however, a public hearing on the assessments. Here is the item as it appears on the agenda under the heading of “Public Hearings:”

“*Reestablishment of the real estate tax rate for the tax year beginning July 1, 2006 and ending June 30, 2007”

The way I now understand it, this is simply a procedural thing required by law because of the gargantuan increase in the assessments. City Council will not officially set the tax rate until later in the budget process.

I apologize for giving readers the wrong impression. That doesn’t mean you still can’t sign up to speak and let your thoughts be heard on the tax rate.
