TILLERY – A state prison inmate died Friday afternoon, the victim of an apparent drowning, in an accident on the Caledonia Prison Farm in Halifax County.
Inmate Terry Grice, 32, was on horseback, tending a herd of cattle when a bull from the herd charged the horse that Grice was riding.
Grice and the horse were knocked into a pond, where Grice apparently drowned.
His body was recovered by rescue divers about 1:30 p.m.
The horse survived the incident unhurt.
Grice was a minimum-custody inmate who was assigned to work on the farm.
He was serving a 9-to-11 month sentence for breaking and entering and larceny after being convicted in Robeson County.
The Halifax County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
