Mary Virginia Chandler Poteat went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006 dying peacefully in her sleep. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.T. “Billy” Poteat, and a son-in-law, Jack Baines.

She is survived by her five children, Lucy Baines Jackson and husband, Randy of Suffolk, Billy C. Poteat and wife, Carolyn of Suffolk, the Rev. R. Lindsay Poteat and wife, Barbara of Smithfield, Sue P. Langdon of Suffolk, Pam P. Amos, and husband, Joe of Westminster, Md., and one brother, Briggs Chandler of Leesburg, Fla.. She also had seven grandchildren, Nancy Fowler and husband, Brian, Kimberly Poteat, Tonya Deaton and husband, Russ, Faith DeFriese and husband, Alan, the Rev. Philip Poteat and wife, Bethany, Jason Amos, and Peter Amos. She had nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Poteat was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Suffolk, where she taught children’s Sunday school for many years, teaching her last class the Sunday before her death. She was active for many years in Child Evangelism Fellowship and had no greater joy than seeing children won to Christ.

Visitation will be Wednesday night from 7 – 8:30 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory. Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church, Suffolk, on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Lindsay Poteat. Interment will be at Holly Lawn Cemetery.
