AHOSKIE n The stage is set.

Despite having to wait an additional 24 hours, Hertford County High School did their part here Saturday night where the Bears set-up the highly anticipated showdown at rival Bertie High this Friday night with a 49-0 rout of visiting First Flight High School.

For the Bears, it was their ninth, regular season win in 10 outings. More importantly, it kept HCHS’ conference record at a perfect 5-0. They will put that unblemished league mark on the line Friday at Bertie where the Falcons, also at 5-0, will host their long time rivals in a game to decide the conference championship.

For a tune-up to that important clash, the Bears simply out-muscled First Flight on Saturday in a game delayed by rain from Friday night.

When the final whistle blew, HCHS had complied 394 yards of total offense and seven TD’s. Leading the way was Rayshawn Mercer who rushed for 147 yards on just nine carries. That one-game total pushed the junior running back over 1,000 yards for the season.

Quarterback Danny Dembry was again effective, despite only playing one half. Dembry passed for 76 yards and ran for 53.

Travis Greene (5 carries for 73 yards) and LaQuan Tann (9-27) added to the Bears rushing attack.

HCHS wasted little time in scoring on Saturday night when, on their second snap from scrimmage, Dembry connected with Mercer on a 47-yard scoring pass.

The Bears wouldn’t score again until the second quarter, but a trio of TD’s over that 12-minute stretch more than sealed the win.

Tann got the 21-point outburst started with his 5-yard scoring run. Later in the period, Greene reeled off a 55-yard jaunt to paydirt. With less than a minute to go before halftime, Tydreke Powell got in on the fun as he rumbled in from five yards out.

Michael Burton (7-for-7 in PAT’s for the game) added all the extra points as the Bears rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead.

HCHS scored twice in the third quarter on runs of 5 and 2 yards by Mercer and Tann respectively

Michael Stephenson’s 3-yard TD run just prior to the midway mark of the fourth quarter completed the rout.
