Sadly, our society has cast an ugly stereotype on those who are mentally ill.
Contrary to popular belief, most mentally ill people are harmless and would appreciate a kind smile or even a simple acknowledgment most of the time.
Thankfully, there is an agency that is there for those with mental illnesses, as well as substance abuse issues.
The Western Tidewater Community Services Board partners with a variety of local government departments and community organizations to help the people of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Franklin and Southampton County care for those with these diseases and illnesses. The WTCSB takes in those who otherwise would be left to fend for themselves and would increase the already growing problem of homelessness. Without the help from the WTCSB, these people could even find themselves breaking the law.
Suffolk is lucky that it has an organization that cares for people that most turn the other cheek toward.
Suffolk is a better place to live, and the people with mental illness and substance abuse are better, because of the work of the WTCSB.
