A 7-month-old boy died in a single-vehicle accident on Holland Road yesterday.
Shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday, a vehicle traveling eastbound in the 4300 block ran off the road, struck a tree and came to rest in a ravine, said city spokeswoman Debbie George. Preliminary investigation revealed that the boy’s father, the driver of the car, may have fallen asleep, George said.
The infant, although strapped into a car seat, was ejected from the car.
The boy’s parents also were injured. His mother was in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as of 7 p.m. Saturday. His father, also at Sentara Norfolk, suffered minor injuries.
Identification of the victims is being withheld until their next of kin is notified. Police believe the family is from out of state, George said.
The family dog also died in the accident.
Officer J.D. Cravey is the investigating officer. The eastbound portion of the road was closed yesterday morning as police investigated the accident.
