A tornado warning is in effect until 10:45 a.m. Monday for extreme southwestern Isle of Wight, central Southampton, west central Suffolk and Franklin.
The National Weather Service showed a tornado located near Boykins and Newsoms in Southampton County at 10:18 a.m., headed northeast at 40 mph.
Heavy rainfall could obscure the tornado, so the weather service urged extreme caution.
As a strong line of thunderstorms moves through northeast North Carolina and eastern Virginia, the area remains under a tornado watch until 3 p.m. Monday.
