A 40-year-old Suffolk woman has been charged with felony hit and run after an accident that sent a 3-year-old to the hospital with head injuries Thursday night.
Police said that Tonya Yevette Moore, of the 900 block of Brook Avenue, was driving a 1995 Chevy van on Kilby Avenue at about 8:20 p.m., when she allegedly struck the girl, Kakiyya Alahad.
Witnesses told police that the child’s mother ran to the van and told Moore she had hit the child, but Moore then sped away from the scene, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George.
Police soon located the vehicle at a nearby convenience store, where they found Moore inside purchasing a beverage, George stated in a press release.
The girl suffered head injuries and was flown by Nightingale Air Ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She has been transferred to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.
Moore was taken to Western Tidewater Regional Jail. She was later released Friday morning on a $5,000 bond.
