Power outages moderate in Suffolk

Roughly 1,000 Dominion Virginia Power customers in Suffolk are without power Thursday afternoon.
Throughout the region, more than 16,000 were without power about 1:30 p.m. The majority of the outages, however, were concentrated in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News. The Southeastern region for Dominion also includes Williamsburg and James City, Charles City and New Kent counties.
“I would characterize this as a wind and tree event,” said Chuck Penn, spokesman for Dominion. “As fast as we get some customers back on, there are outages at another location. The numbers will go up and come down as the storm plays itself out.”
Penn said technicians were restoring power as quickly as they could throughout the day.
“They’re working on hazardous conditions,” Penn said. “When it’s windy and rainy, it impacts our ability to get to the site to do the restoration and slows us down in completing the restoration.”
Customers without power were encouraged to call 888-667-3000 to report the outage. Residents should not assume that others in their area already have called.
