A massive transformer being moved from a rail car to a substation in the Downtown area could cause traffic delays, especially in the Hull Street area, from 8 to 10 a.m. on Friday, officials announced on Wednesday.

The piece of equipment is 12 feet wide and 91 feet long.

It will be offloaded from a rail car at the end of Hull Street. From there, the travel route will move left onto Kilby Avenue, right onto Carolina Road, left onto Dill Road, right onto Hunter Street and then right onto Factory Street/Hosier Road, before ending at the substation.

Police escorts have been arranged, and Dominion Virginia Power and Verizon both will be onsite while the move is taking place, according to Suffolk officials.

The Department of Public Works has placed message boards along the route to warn about the move, and officials are asking that vehicles not be parked along the streets where the move is to take place.
