Suffolk police spent much of the day on Friday investigating a two-car accident on Portsmouth Boulevard near Suburban Drive that sent four people to area hospitals.
Portsmouth Boulevard was closed for hours for the cleanup and investigation following the 12:45 p.m. accident. Traffic was re-routed along Nansemond Parkway, which was bumper-to-bumper for much of the afternoon. All four lanes of Portsmouth Boulevard had been re-opened by 6 p.m.
Early reports indicated that a passenger vehicle involved in the accident had hit a sport utility vehicle, which then flipped across the median and landed near oncoming traffic.
All cars along all four lanes of the busy Suffolk highway came to a halt as emergency crews worked to treat the four victims and clear the wreckage.
All four victims were hospitalized following the accident. One victim was taken by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, according to Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George.
