A Suffolk boy is dead, and his mother is severely injured, after she fell asleep at the wheel in Accomack County on Monday.
Yasann Clark, 7, of the 800 block of Clarys Drive, died Monday evening at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, where he was airlifted following the wreck. His mother, Yolanda Cherese Bland, 39, suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she is in critical condition.
According to a state police press release, Bland was driving a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser on Route 13 in Accomack County when she fell asleep at about 4:43 p.m. The car drifted to the left before Bland apparently overcorrected and lost control. The vehicle flipped four times before coming to rest in a ditch on its roof, according to the press release.
The boy was seated in the back seat in a child restraint, police said. A front-seat passenger, Michael Dodlie, was treated and released at the scene.
Bland has been charged with reckless driving. Other charges are pending.
