Firefighters battle blaze in woods
Suffolk firefighters are battling a woods fire this afternoon in the Gates Road area.
Units from Suffolk Fire and Rescue, Holland Volunteer Fire Department, Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Forestry fought the fire for five hours Wednesday night. The fire was contained to a 15-acre area after fire lines were plowed around the fire. No structures were threatened and no one was injured.
Thursday afternoon, units monitoring the area discovered the fire had rekindled. Units from Suffolk Fire and Rescue are back on scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, city spokeswoman Debbie George said.
