Just days before the annual National Night Out, an event aimed at reducing crime in Suffolk, police are dealing with two violent incidents Sunday morning – one of them a murder.

According to Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George, police responded to a disturbance call on the 200 block of Walnut Street around 1:40 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered 18-year-old Tyquan Lewis had been shot in the neck. The victim was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This marks Suffolk’s second murder of the year. The first came just two weeks ago, when 25-year-old Alissa Johnson was shot and killed on Cogic Square.

Roughly 15 minutes later, police were called to Sentara Obici Hospital’s emergency room, where they found a 16-year-old male had been stabbed in the back during a wedding reception on Manning Road. At the moment, the victim’s status is unknown.
